DIRECTED SILENT RETREATS

5 DAY & 8 DAY DIRECTED RETREATS

These retreats for Priests, Religious, Consecrated, and Laypersons are regularly scheduled throughout the year.  They consist of meeting with an assigned director once a day for 45 minutes to an hour. The director will assign scripture and graces for prayer during 4-5 Holy Hours spread throughout the day. Mass is offered each day, along with opportunities for Confession.

30 DAY IGNATIAN SPRITIUAL EXERCISES

Every summer in July, the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises are offered by application at Broom Tree for Priests, Seminarians, Religious, and Consecrated in a 30-Day, silent retreat format. We also offer the Exercises for Laypersons in May each year. Through an application process that requires at least one letter of recommendation and prior silent retreat experience, we will determine acceptance into the retreat.

The Ignatian Spiritual Exercises are also offered through Broom Tree in the 19th Annotation format, 33 weeks, meeting with a Director once per week.

Directed REtreats for Religious & Laity

These directed silent retreats for Religious and Laity follow the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. They begin the afternoon of the first day and end after lunch on the last day. The schedule includes Mass, spiritual direction, and opportunities for confession and Adoration. The remainder of your time is spent in individual prayer.

If approved, you will be notified via email. If a retreat is fully booked, we encourage you to submit the application and reference to be considered for the waiting list. 


The cost for the five-day retreat, including meals, lodging, spiritual direction, and tax, is $938.48.  A non-refundable deposit of $225 is required to confirm your spot on the retreat once you have been approved.


The cost for the eight-day retreat, including meals, lodging, spiritual direction, and tax, is $1,491.56.  A non-refundable deposit of $350 is required to confirm your spot on the retreat once you have been approved.

  • Where is Broom Tree?

    Broom Tree, owned and operated by the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls, is located in southeastern South Dakota roughly an hour southwest of Sioux Falls, six miles west of the small town of Irene, SD, off of HWY 46.   



  • What is the best way to get there?

    Arriving by Air


    If you are flying into the Sioux Falls airport and need transportation to Broom Tree, there are several options:


    LYFT – This ride-sharing service is available from the Sioux Falls airport.  You can book your ride via the Lyft website.


    Rent a Car – Several car rental companies are located at the airport.  You can book a vehicle here.


    Elite Limousine – Elite offers rides at any time of the day or night.  You may contact them directly at Info@elitelimosf.com or by phone at 605-335-4041.


    Broom Tree Ride Service – If available, a friend of Broom Tree or one of our staff will pick you up at the airport.  Contact us at 605-263-1040 or broomtree@sfcatholic.org for cost and availability.



    Arriving by Car

    • From Interstate 29 - Take exit 47 west onto SD Hwy 46.  Go 25.5 miles to 446th Avenue (six miles west of Irene, SD).  Turn left (south) onto 446th Avenue and go 1.3 miles to Saint Raphael Circle.  Turn right and follow the driveway past the barn and the church to the Retreat Center.  

    • From SD Hwy 81 - Go east on SD Hwy 46 six miles to 446th Avenue.  Turn right (south) onto 446th Avenue and go 1.3 miles to Saint Raphael Circle.  Turn right and follow the driveway past the barn and the church to the Retreat Center. 

  • What is the retreat cost?

  • How do I begin the directed retreat application process?

    In addition to filling out our application, you'll need a Letter of Recommendation from your Spiritual Director.  If you are unknown to our Directors, a phone interview to discern readiness may also be requested. Once these three steps are complete, a decision will be made, and you will receive an email notification.
